photo.JPGWelcome to 300 The Fenway's first installment of "Where are they now?", a new feature that chronicles the amazing women who graduated from Simmons College. This series offers you a glimpse into the fast-paced careers of recent Simmons alumnae, their life after college, and the lessons they learned along the way. You'll read about nurses at nationally ranked hospitals; newspaper journalists covering celebrity news; creative managers for national advertising campaigns, and more!

First up is Jacqueline Doherty from the Class of 2011. Jacqueline transferred to Simmons during the fall of her junior year and she graduated with a B.A. in Marketing from the Simmons School of Management. She currently works as an assistant account executive at the national advertising agency, Hill Holliday. Hill Holliday has won numerous awards for advertising excellence and made Advertising Age's list of Best Places to Work. Their roster of clients include leading national brands such as Anheuser-Busch, Dunkin' Donuts, Bank of America, and Liberty Mutual.



What is a typical day like at your job?
I work in the Account Service Department of the agency, so I spend my days attending meetings and staying on top of all the projects that are currently being worked on for my client. I also do a lot of back end work to make sure all of the ads that are in a live environment are performing to the best of their ability and I troubleshoot any problems that may arise. And of course, I surf the internet to stay on top of all the work other brands are putting out.

What was the job application process like for you?
In the spring semester of my senior year I interned for the same team I now work on at Hill Holiday. Upon graduation, I was contacted by the agency when a spot on the team opened up. From there I began the interview process and landed my current position!

What is your favorite part of your job?
There are so many awesome aspects of my job, but I think my favorite part would be seeing an advertisement produced by my agency (whether I have helped work on it or not) on TV, the radio, online, etc. You can appreciate the final product more when you know how much hard work went into it. Not everyone works in a job where they can see the tangible "fruits of their labor."

How did you know the organization was a good fit for you?
I knew the organization was the right place for me when I met the people I would be working with. My coworkers are all so smart, but they also know how to have a good time. Everyone puts a big effort into making strong relationships with each other, and we genuinely care about each other's well-being.

What was your favorite class at Simmons? Why?
Consumer Behavior (MGMT 230) with Professor Jill Avery. I loved this class because I learned so much about myself as a consumer, and what other consumers find valuable or not. It was so interesting to learn where consumers talk about the brands they engage with and how marketers can use this information to develop a stronger brand strategy.

Non-profit management and entrepreneurship MBA student Obiageli Ukadike recognized a serious education gap in Ghana, Africa. People with physical disabilities are often shunned from mainstream society and denied access to quality education.

To combat this injustice, Oby co-founded The WaWa Project, a non-profit organization aimed at providing education to physically disabled children in Ghana. The WaWa Project plans to raise approximately $2.5 million over the next five years to build a handicap accessible secondary school for children grades six through twelve. The non-profit will build the school, hire local staff and administrators and create education plans to teach students skills they can use post graduation. Oby is ecstatic about the attention her cause has received.

Entrepreneurship is a vital part of our economy and is a direct path to leadership. The American Express OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses reported that between 1997 and 2011, the number of businesses in the U.S. increased by 34%, but the number of women-owned firms increased by 50%.

There is no argument that starting a business is challenging, especially with limited access to monetary and supportive resources. Simmons recognizes the barriers facing many entrepreneurs and has created a program that aims to foster their innovative ideas.

The annual Silverman Business Plan Competition was created to support women in launching innovative and successful ventures, and is open exclusively to Simmons School of Management MBA alumnae and current students. Participants have the opportunity to compete for a prize of $10,000 in cash. Finalists will receive access to resources to help build their business, including one-on-one coaching from seasoned entrepreneurs, and access to the vast Simmons network of venture capitalists, angel investors, bankers and lawyers.

Women's Leadership Conference 2011

This year's Simmons Leadership Conference was a huge success! The College brought in such a diverse array of speakers that every topic was covered, and everyone came away feeling empowered and ready to rethink strategies in their own businesses. Watch this video to see why returning participants say this year was, by far, their favorite.

Speakers like Anne Mulcahy, Donna Karan, Judith Jamison and Maria Hinojosa shared their personal journeys on how they became leaders in their own professions, overcoming significant obstacles along the way.

On Friday, I mentioned that the SOM's entrepreneurship program was ranked one of the top 25 programs in the entire nation. But, what's even more exciting is that it's the only program designed specifically for women to make the list.

Later that day, SOM Professor Teresa Nelson joined NECN's Laytoia Edwards to discuss exactly how we tailor our program to meet the needs of women. She says the SOM's program is unique because it focuses on teaching students how to navigate through their social realities. For example, women entrepreneurs typically receive less than 10% of venture capital compared with 90% for men. When asked how the SOM helps women tap into more funding, Teresa says we do what any good business school does: we help students to understand what the issues are, build competitive business plans, and how to "talk business." Enjoy!


Congratulations to the School of Management! Its entrepreneurship program was just ranked by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review as one of the nation's top 25 programs. A big deal considering it's the only program on the list specifically designed for women.

We shot this video last year (when we introduced the entrepreneurship minor) of SOM Professor Susan Duffy, who says teaching entrepreneurship at Simmons is important because entrepreneurship is the "great equal opportunity employer." She says anyone can be an entrepreneur! Even me? You know, I have been wanting to start up my own 24-hour coffee shop/lounge in Charlestown... hmmm... *wheels spinning*... At any rate, Susan says the time for women entrepreneurs is now, so what better place to gain the knowledge and skills than at Simmons? After all, it is one of the best!
